Hymn singing is part of the life blood of the Church of Jesus. They are usually simple, genuinely emotional, poetic and literary in style, spiritual in quality, and their purpose are not only to worship the Lord but to unify the congregation while singing. Hymn singing cannot be removed from the faith of Jesus Christ without harming the faith. The Word, Prayer, and singing are the three elements (erythrocyte, leukocytes, and platelet) of the life blood of communication between God and man. An attack on any is an attack on our effective fellowship and spiritual communion. Prayer includes petition, supplication, and thanksgiving. These are indispensable dimensions of the Christian prayer life. Hymns, Psalms and spiritual songs are the indispensable dimensions of the Christian singing. They are specifically mentioned in scriptures. Col 3:16.
1.Through hymn we confess Christ, e.g. Who Came Down from Heaven to Earth; One Offer of Salvation; I will Sing the Wondrous Story
2. Through hymns we meditate on the doctrines of the Christian faith, as hymns are rich in theology and essential for meditation, .e.g. His Grace Reaches Me; One Offer of Salvation; Our God, He is Alive
3. Through hymn we sing prayers to God. We sing complete stanzas of heart felt and well collected prayers to God, e.g. Saviour, more than Life to me; Rock of Ages; Abide with me;Just a Closer walk with thee; Pass me not O Gentle Saviour; Take my Life and Let it be
4. Through hymns we sing about situations of the Christian life, e.g. I Travel down a Lonely Road;
5. Through hymns we speak to and admonish one another in the faith, as hymns are a teaching tool (Colosians 3:16). e.g. Trust and Obey; Stand up, Stand Up for Jesus; Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power
Hymns are portable sermons that articulate, exegete and pronounce biblical truths. They shape the way we view God, man and Christ. Hymns keep us in touch with our Christian heritage. Hymn singing has been part of Christian worship life since apostolic times. Jesus himself sang hymn and handed same down for his Church. Christianity did not begin the day we bought our Bibles, neither did it begin with us (1 Cor 14:36). We can’t invent new worship of God. Hymns are part of our traditional, historical, and scriptural worship life of the Christian faith. It is either we are part of the church of Jesus on earth once overseen by his Apostles, or we are set to write our own Bibles and not the new testament whose books consists of the apostles’ letters.
