The Eternal Word of God became flesh and was born, lived among men, preached, suffered, was crucified, died, was buried, resurrected, ascended into heaven and is seated at the right of God the Father. This is what we refer to as the finished or accomplished work of Christ. Do you know God’s purpose for this accomplished feat of Jesus Christ? See z
1. For the salvation of Mankind
Mankind was lost in sin and of necessity needed to suffer the wages of sins which is death. (Rom 3:23; Rom 6:23)
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Hebrews 5:9
[9]And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Hebrews 9:28
[28]So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Romans 1:16
[16]For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
2. For the forgiveness of Sins
Acts 5:30-31
[30]The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
[31]Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
3. To fulfill the law and establish a new covenant
By fulfilling the demands of the law, Christ took away the old covenant and established a new covenant
Matthew 5:17-18
[17]Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18]For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Hebrews 10:5-9
[5]Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
[6]In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
[7]Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
[8]Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
[9]Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Romans 10:3-4
[3]For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
[4]For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Hebrews 8:6-10,13
[6]But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
[7]For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
[8]For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
[9]Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
[10]For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
[13]In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Luke 22:20
[20]Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
3. To reconcile man unto God
By reason of sin man was separated from God who is infinitely holy. Christ came to die for our sins and reconcile us back to God.
Isaiah 59:1-2
[1]Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
[2]But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
2 Corinthians 5:18
[18]And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
Romans 5:10
[10]For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
4.To established a system of grace
Grace is God’s unmerited favour to man.
John 1:17
[17]For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:2
[2]By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Galatians 5:4
[4]Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
Romans 6:14
[14]For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Ephesians 2:8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
5. To establish an everlasting priesthood
Hebrews 7:21,23-25
[21](For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
[23]And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
[24]But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
[25]Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
6. For the giving of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:16-18,22-24,32-33
[16]But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
[17]And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
[18]And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
[22]Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
[23]Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
[24]Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
[32]This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
[33]Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
7. To establish a spiritual system of things
John 4:21-24
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Acts 17:24-25
[24]God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
[25]Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Hebrews 9:8-11
[8]The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
[9]Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
[10]Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.
[11]But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
8. To destroy principality and powers
Colossians 2:15
And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Hebrews 2:14
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
9. To take away sicknesses and diseases
Isaiah 53:5
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Matthew 8:16-17
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
1 Peter 2:24
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
10. To destroy sin and the works of the devil
Romans 6:5-6
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
1 John 3:8
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
